You choose to play as a count, duke, or king in Europe and the surrounding era during the Great Crusades, and rule over your family for the next several hundred years. It has a lot in common with other Paradox Grand Strategy games, however I found this one more engaging and easier to jump into. It's less about war and more about building a dynasty to last while protecting the faith in missions from the church. It's absorbing in the way only strategy games can be, but a little buggy and crash-worthy, and a few mods come in handy for fixing the questionable interface graphics, particularly the minimap. Already becoming one of my favorites games.. Was looking foward to replaying it, but it just won't start.. The best pop-up simulator I have ever played! One of the great features is that during a war, you'll be notified about deciding the future of an child's education who is of no relation to you whatsoever; or better still, you'll be told that someone who you have never heard of died of old age. Endless fun that never gets old! During serious wars, you may even get pop-ups every few seconds; if really lucky, you'll even get pop-ups over the top of other pop-ups, and in the confusion, you'll be clicking on the wrong pop-ups! This game is a MUST HAVE to go along with your grass growing and paint drying simulators.*SPOILER ALERT*As a real rewarding bonus, the game will stall every month for a couple of seconds, just for a more immersive experience. While the game saves, the stalling will last longer.. This is probably THE reference for all medieval grand strategy fans out there. You can spend hours managing your dynasty's spread across Europe, or keeping in check its many rivals. For a more recent game, check out the sequel : Crusader Kings II.. More addictive than crack.. Very well done. The commands are difficult and tedious, but once you learn the system, it is a great game. 8/10. Historical gaming primarily focused on family management (yes, there is war and conquest but I end up spending more time managing family affairs than managing armies and territories.) It feels very "Darwinian" going through the list of brides in the general ledger, searching for the stats and traits that will improve the descendency for your family and your courtier's families.Having played this and CKII I have to say I find the original more enjoyable. The graphics are less polished and it is simpler but this simplicity can actually be an advantage in terms of how much fun is it to play.11/2017 update - I'm nominating this for the "No Apologies" Steam Awards!
